after your procedure
Whether you have come for simple teeth whitening or a more complex root canal, it is normal to have sensitivity, speech difficulty, pain and some bleeding after your treatment. Most likely, you will be informed of the temporary after effects of your procedure during your visit. In any case, we want to provide some remedies below. If you feel that your symptoms are more severe than the typical after effects, never hesitate to revisit our office for an examination and stronger professional remedy.
crown & bridge
As stated in the crown and bridge section, it will likely take a little while before you are used to your new bite. We recommend eating soft foods until you are comfortable. It is important that your other teeth are taken care of by brushing at least twice per day, flossing at least once per day, and using antiseptic mouth wash.
dental implants
After receiving dental implants, you will likely experience discomfort including swelling in your face and gums and some bleeding and bruising. We typically prescribe prescription pain medication to alleviate the pain. The healing time can vary from person to person, but a dental implant typically takes up to six months.
veneers
Veneers will last up to ten years before they need replacing. They really don’t require any special care other than the care you currently provide with good oral hygiene. We do caution our patients to avoid food and beverages that can cause stains such as red wine, coffee and tea as often as possible. While the veneers are heavily resistant to stains, partaking of these types of foods and beverages often can take its toll.
tooth filling
After having your tooth filling, it is likely that your tooth will be highly sensitive for a couple of weeks, but will soon pass without you even realizing it. Until that time, the rule of thumb is to simply avoid anything that causes your tooth to hurt. If after a month you are still experiencing considerable pain, we can apply a desensitizing agent to the area or look at the possibilities of a root canal procedure.
dentures
We don’t expect that you will experience much discomfort at all with your dentures. However, if you are having problems with the dentures not fitting properly, we will want to make some adjustments until you are comfortable. Don’t be surprised if we have to make a few adjustments over the next year as your gums shrink due to healing from the tooth loss. We will give you a thorough education and likely send you home with some instructional sheets on how to care for your dentures regularly.
root canal
Root canals have a reputation for being painful, but with the right management you should experience minimal problems. During your procedure you’ll be given an anesthetic, which will wear off. When you regain sensation you may feel pain, but we will prescribe a painkiller. Pain shouldn’t last more than a few days.
tooth extraction
If you have a tooth removed, you should avoid rinsing the blood, drinking alcohol, or smoking for at least 72 hours. Swelling is normal and can be reduced with an ice pack. You’ll be given an oral pain medication. If you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, or swelling for longer than two days, contact our office .
gum treatments
The most obvious after care treatment is to avoid any problems that lead to gum disease in the first place. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene includes brushing at least twice a day, flossing regularly, and using an antiseptic mouth wash. We will likely recommend a more frequent visitation habit so that we can ensure your teeth and gums are healthy.
