1. Discard Brushes After Sickness
It’s that time of the year for us in Tennessee to start thinking about Spring cleaning. Spring is only a month away and that means allergies, sickness, and sniffles. One of the best practices in keeping your health up is to change out your toothbrush after you’ve been sick. Toothbrushes can have microbial build-up, causing not only sickness, but prolonged, repeated sickness. There’s nothing worse than beating a cold only to gain it back a week later. It’s probably been awhile since you changed toothbrushes anyway — it’s time to buy new toothbrushes for you and your family.
2. Handle Shapes Don’t Matter
There are a lot of toothbrushes out there. 3.5 billion toothbrushes are sold around the world each year, and many of them are trying to compete in a crowded marketplace. With competition, there leads to a growing list of toothbrushes that are ever more complicated and have curved or straight handles. While these are definitely striking to look at and choose from, the effectiveness has very little to do with the style of the handle.
3. Electric Does Not Mean Better
Going along with the number of toothbrushes in the marketplace, there’s a rise of “the electric toothbrush” and a perception that electric is better. While many commercials may seem like electric is the next big thing, there’s no proven data to show that they clean more effectively. Just because 4 out of 5 dentists agree it’s a good toothbrush, does not mean it’s “better” for your teeth, it’s just another option in a sea of good options.
4. Sugar-Free Gum Helps Your Teeth
Gum may be one of the biggest villains to your teeth besides straight sugar, as it gets into the nooks and crannies of your teeth and can cause cavities like nobodies business. However, sugar-free gum is great for your teeth! How? Well, sugar-free gum, as with the same method of sugar-laced gum, causes saliva build-up and gets into the crevasses of your teeth, helping to wash away plaque acid which in turn leads to healthier teeth!
5. Don’t Brush Too Hard!
One issue with brushing teeth that’s fairly common is that the pressure that everyone brushes is completely different. However, using too much pressure can cause various problems such as eroding enamel and irritating the gums. If you’re causing your gums to bleed every time you brush your teeth it is probably time to let up on the grindstone.
